During Ramadan, restaurants are shut during the day in many Islamic countries. The day starts with the family gathering at the dawn for suhoor, or sehari (the meal eaten before sunrise) as it is called in India.
After the sun sets, the fast is broken with a meal known as iftar.
In the evening, after the fast is broken, the streets are full of stalls displaying sweets, sherbets (cold drinks) and other delicacies. Here, a man is frying malpuas on Mumbai's Mohammed Ali road.
