Fasting is one of the five pillars (duties) of Islam.
The other pillars are shahada (confession of faith), salat (prayer), zakat (the giving of alms), and Hajj (the pilgrimage to Mecca). All able Muslims above the age of 12 fast during Ramadan.
Fasting serves many purposes. It is believed that when a Muslim is hungry and thirsty, he is reminded of the suffering of the poor. Fasting during Ramadan is seen as an opportunity given by Allah to practise self-control and cleanse the body and mind.
At twilight, Minara Masjid in Mumbai looks like a beautiful picture postcard. By evening, the Masjid will be full of devotees who have come to perform namaaz.
