The Top Five Rock Bands Ever

Pink Floyd

Pubs around the world still raise cheers from regulars when they slip in a CD by the Floyd.

The English band famous for its psychedelic rock has long had fans in India, and continues to find rabid new converts at college campuses around the country. What is it about them that works -- the sonic experiments, legendary sets used at live shows, lyrics that border on philosophy?

Whatever it is, 200 million album sales prove that it works very well indeed.

From an underground band led by the eccentric Syd Barrett, the Floyd slowly grew in stature. After Barrett was replaced by David Gilmour, their climb to the top came quick via albums like The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here and The Wall.

That run ended in 1985 when Roger Waters walked away, but the remaining members continued recording. Waters later won the right to use the name Pink Floyd, and even performed in India, much to the delight of thousands who had waited decades for the event.

Twenty four years after splitting, the band came together on July 2, 2005 at the London Live 8 concert. Fans still hope for a reunion.

Listen to this: The Dark Side of the Moon [1973]; Wish You Were Here [1975]; Animals [1977]; The Wall [1979].
