The Top Five Rock Bands Ever

Led Zeppelin

When this legendary band decided to do a one-off benefit concert on 10 December 2007, three decades after disbanding, thousands of fans from around the world vied for the limited number of tickets on sale.

Thirty years after they stopped creating music together, Zeppelin continue to attract new generations of the faithful.

Formed in 1968 by four English lads -- Robert Plant [vocals], Jimmy Page [guitar], John Paul Jones [bass] and John Bonham [drums] -- Led Zeppelin are often thought of as one of the first heavy metal bands.

They managed to go far beyond the rules of rock though, seamlessly integrating everything from reggae to Arabic music into their colourful repertoire. And they did this effortlessly, topping charts worldwide in the process, until the death of John Bonham.

If figures mean anything, they sold more than 300 million albums worldwide in their heyday, and are still ranked Number 1 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock. Slide in the Zeppelin doing Whole Lotta Love, turn up the volume on your CD player, and you'll know why.

Listen to this: Led Zeppelin [1969]; Led Zeppelin III [1970]; Physical Graffiti [1975]; The BBC Sessions [1997].
