CONSUMER DURABLES ENTER BOOM TIME: The Rs 20,000 crore (Rs 20 billion) consumer durable industry is experiencing boom times. The festival spirit has made many consumers buy white goods.

Analysts say the huge amounts that white goods manufacturing companies have spent this season on advertising and promotional campaigns are paying off. The industry has spent about Rs 250 crore (Rs 2.5 billion) on gifts and promotions.

Sales of refrigerators, washing machines, television sets, music systems, all have registered a big jump. The good monsoon has helped perk up sales in rural markets too. Motorcycles, tractors, and fast-moving consumer goods are registering a higher-than-projected growth rate.

Cars and lifestyle goods too are selling big time. With consumer spending rising, the economy is showing stronger signs of firm growth.
