CRICKET Sachin and the Ferrari The finance ministry exempted Sachin Tendulkar from paying around Rs 1.13 crores (Rs 11.3 million) towards the import duty of a red Ferrari, valued at Rs 75 lakhs (about Rs 7.5 million). Ferrari's Formula 1 world champion Michael Schumacher presented the car on the company's behalf to Tendulkar when the two stars met last year in Silverstone, England. The decision to write off 120 percent duty normally levied on all foreign-made cars generated heated national debate and dented Tendulkar's iconic status in cricket-crazy India. In August, the Delhi high court issued a notice to the cricket superstar on a public interest petition challenging the exemption he had sought and got. In defence, the government said it was a small gesture of appreciation for a sporting legend who has brought joy and pride to hundreds of millions of Indians.
