SPORT An Indian at Tiger's Court Arjun Atwal was known as the 'nearly man' of Indian golf until recently. But the 31 year old, who grew up in Kolkata and Long Island, New York, shed that tag when he won the Malaysian Open in February to claim his second European Tour title. He then won the Hero Honda Masters in November and ended the year in a blaze of glory by becoming the first Indian to qualify for the prestigious US PGA Tour. 'Playing the PGA Tour is something I always dreamt about. This is the ultimate for any professional golfer. The fact that I would be able to rub shoulders with players like Tiger Woods, Ernie Els, Vijay Singh and others week in and week out is an exciting thought. It would also be the finest test of my skills and abilities as a golfer,' said Atwal, the only Asian to win two European PGA Tour titles. A week later, he was named Asian PGA Player of the Year and crowned with the Asian PGA Tour Order of Merit. Text: Ivan Crasto Atwal wins Hero Honda Masters Atwal wins Malaysian Open
