CRICKET So near, yet so far… The dream run ended one step short, when Australia crushed India in the 2003 World Cup final at the Wanderers on March 23. 593 runs were scored in what, after bowlers had ruled the roost in the tournament, ended a batsman's final. Australia won by a huge 125 runs and stamped its authority as the best side on the planet. Skipper Ricky Ponting scored a career best 140 that saw Australia race away to 359/2 off their 50 overs after India won the toss and asked the Aussies to bat. India's answer ended in the first over when Glen McGrath dismissed Sachin Tendulkar for 4. Despite a valiant knock from Virender Sehwag and the threat of rain, Australia became the only side to win the World Cup thrice, in 1987, 1999 and 2003.
