The Blessed Teresa

At a ceremony at the Vatican on October 19, attended by around 250,000 people and broadcast worldwide, Pope John Paul II beatified Mother Teresa. She will now be known as the Blessed Teresa.

But the move hitched her name to two controversies: one about the miracle attributed to her; the other about the alacrity at which the Pope sought to confer sainthood on her.

Canonisation -- the process of conferring sainthood -- is a long winding procedure, which has sometimes consumed a few centuries. In Mother Teresa's case, just six years after her death in 1997, she is just one step away from sainthood.
