Vajpayee arrived in Islamabad on Saturday to a red carpet welcome. He was received by Jamali and accorded a tri-services guard of honour.

Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka established SAARC on December 8, 1985, when its charter was formally adopted.

The multilateral organisation provides a platform for the people of South Asia to work together in a spirit of friendship, trust and understanding. It also aims to accelerate the process of economic and social development in member states.
