Deol season at the marquee

It's been a long time since we saw this angry young man pluck out a tube well and chase off Pakistanis on the large screen. As much as we might be tempted to think back about the disastrous Naksha, or the terrible Dosti, which were the last two releases of Sunny and Bobby Deol respectively, one mustn't forget that Gadar: Ek Prem Katha is, after all, the biggest Bollywood grosser ever, having made as much as Rs 70,00,00,000 as net gross.

And this summer, the Punjabi pack is back with a vengeance with releases all lined up for the box office.

The Deol season began with Bobby Deol's Shakalaka Boom Boom, which released last week. The usually reticent Deol is touring to promote this film because he feels that the character of an insecure rockstar has given him a chance to explore his acting side.

"I am not superhuman and we all feel insecure at times," Bobby says. "That's because we all have responsibilities. This character has to do things that are bad, and he gradually begins to believe that bad is good."

And before you would have recovered from the new look, new feel Bobby, bade bhaiyya Sunny's Big Brother is all set to hit theaters come April 13.

Directed by cousin Guddu Dhanoa, the film also stars Priyanka Chopra.

May sees another Deol release. Abhay Deol's Ek Chalis Ki Last Local, which releases on May 13, is a film about a Mumbaikar who goes missing on the last local train.

For Abhay, who seems to have avoided getting into the commercial mould, Ek Chalis... is just the right canvas on which to showcase his refined histrionic skills.

But the mega project that has distributors and film buffs agog is the all Deol starrer Apne which also releases in May. "Apne is my tribute to the Deol family," says director Anil Sharma.

The film, starring Dharmendra, Sunny and Bobby, also features Shilpa Shetty.

"I consider myself fortunate because out of all the girls in the industry, I was picked to play a lead role in the Deol special film!" Shilpa exclaims.

Finally, June wraps up the Deol bonanza with Sunny's adventure movie Kaafila, which deals with human trafficking.

"We don't plan this as brothers," Bobby said, trying to explain the Deol season at the marquee. "It just happened, and I hope that all these film do well too."
