Kufri is 16 km from Shimla on the Tibet road and is a popular ski resort. At an altitude of 2,500 m Kufri is a place of alpine mountain views. In the area is a small, nondescript temple, a park of Himalayan wildlife and an interesting orchard (Dane's Folly).
Kufri is surrounded by pretty deodar forests that afford pleasant treks and horse riding. Chharabra for instance is three km away through the forest and the site of the former residence of British Raj general, Lord Kitchener. Ten kilometres away is the picnic spot of Mashobra where a Mahindra resort has come up. Chail is about 45 km from Kufri and Naldehra, a small village famous for one of the oldest and highest golf courses in India with the Mahunag temple in the middle, is about 25 km away from Shimla. Fagu, gateway to the apple orchards, is 22 kms away from Shimla. It offers lovely views of the Choor Dhar Peak.
Kufri is the site of a winter snow sports festival in February. For those who have done skiing in Europe and the US perhaps the facilities at Kufri may not measure up but the slopes around here are some of the best in India, with slopes for beginners too.
Kufri is easily approached by air, road and rail. The nearest railhead is Shimla 16 kms away. The Shatabdi Express, the Himalayan Queen and the Ekta Express connects New Delhi with Kalka. From Kalka it is possible to reach Shimla by connecting trains. The journey takes about five to six hours. Kufri is a 25 minutes drive from Shimla, 19 kms away.
Local taxis can also be hired from Shimla to Kufri.
