Meerut: 1857 Uprising Celebrations Begin

May 4, 2007
Ironically, even after 150 years, the park is still named as Victoria Park and no government has bothered to rename the park in the last 60 years after Independence.

"There have been attempts to rename Victoria Park on many occasions, but so far it has not be changed," says Dr Amit Pathak, who is organising various events for the 1857 Uprising in Meerut.

There were attempts to rename Victoria Park as Kranti Bagh and Bharatiya Janata Party government in UP had also thought of renaming it as Bahma Shah Baug, but that too did not materialise.

Sadly enough, in the last 60 years of independence, the government did not even bother to build a museum in memory of these martyrs. Even the memorial of Shaheed Samarak was used as a urinal and there was no proper maintenance of it till recently.

Shaheed Samarak was a monument built by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in 1957 to commememorate 100 years of the First War of Independence and since then things have been in utter neglect.
