A nation's prayers save Prince
July 24, 2006
Over the next two days the soldiers undertook a complex operation to rescue the child, that captured the imagination of millions who watched live TV broadcasts.
Soldiers scraped out drums of mud from an abandoned well three metres from the shaft, taking care not to use heavy machinery so the soil would not cave in on the boy.
Meanwhile, oxygen was pumped into the pit and rescuers kept up a constant conversation with Prince to keep up his morale. Biscuits, chocolates and milk were lowered to him by a rope.
