Outside the MSG, activists numbering less than 200 and associated with the Coalition Against Genocide stood in the cold, shouting slogans and holding placards against Modi.

Smita Narula, director of the Centre for Human Rights and Global Justice, New York University, said Modi's role during the Gujarat riots was recorded by many independent agencies.

"Modi cannot wash his hands of what happened during those days," she said.

CAG president Ranjit Singh said, "Pluralism is the cornerstone of India and nobody has any right to do away with it."

"This was just a token protest as our main demand was met," George Abraham, CAG general secretary, said about the low turnout.
