INTERNATIONAL NEWS …and Pakistan reciprocates After Prime Minister A B Vajpayee offered a handshake of peace, Islamabad did not lag behind in pushing the peace agenda. On Eid, Pakistan offered a complete ceasefire along the Line of Control and the Siachen glacier, which India accepted. After agreeing to most of India's confidence building measures -- including full resumption of cricketing and other sporting links, launching a bus service between Srinagar and Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, and increasing the frequency of the Delhi-Lahore bus service -- Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf hinted he was willing to reconsider Pakistan's long-standing demand for a plebiscite in Kashmir. Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Jamali later denied the offer. There were reports that the US had used its clout with Russia, China, and the United Kingdom to pressure both Musharraf and Vajpayee to initiate the peace measures and agree to a full dialogue.
