INTERNATIONAL NEWS The man who'd be governor Piyush 'Bobby' Jindal gave Indian Americans a political profile when he made the closest run thus far for the highest office in a state: governor of Louisiana as a candidate of the Republican Party. Bobby, who was born and brought up in Baton Rouge after his parents migrated from India, became the first person of Indian origin to run for such high office. He won the primary but in the November 15 runoff he lost to Democrat Kathleen Babineaux Blanco. She polled 699,051 votes (52 percent) against Bobby's 648,736 (48 percent). Bobby -- the senior-most Indian American in the Bush administration as assistant secretary for planning and evaluation at the US department of health and human services -- resigned from his post on February 21 to run for governor.
