K P S Gill favours early elections in Gujarat

K P S Gill, security adviser to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, said early elections was the 'best option' to end the atmosphere of fear and violence in the state.

In an interview to a television channel, Gill said political parties and organisations were still attempting to destabilise community equations, but elections would force them to concentrate on restoring peace and normalcy.

"The earlier the elections, the better it will be," Gill said.

Gill's remarks come close on the heels of Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani's comments that a sense of insecurity still exists in Gujarat, and just three days before the planned Jagannath rath yatra (chariot-led procession) in Ahmedabad.

Gill said although the violence has stopped, a psychological fear still exists in the minds of minorities.

He pointed out to the perception that the forthcoming yatra is going to be a 'dangerous affair'.

However, he asserted that elaborate security arrangements have been made and that para-military forces rushed to help to police.

Certain elements would like to keep things a 'little destabilised' till the time of the elections, Gill said.

"I am not blaming any group, but the entire political spectrum," he said.
