Entourage accompanying Jagannath rath yatra in Ahmedabad reduced

In view of the security situation, the entourage accompanying the 125th Jagannath rath yatra (chariot-led procession) to be taken out in Ahmedabad on July 12 has been drastically reduced, the Jagannath temple's chief priest Rameshwardas said on Monday.

Addressing a press conference in the city, he said only 35 trucks and members from 15 akharas (religious seminaries) would accompany the procession as against the regular practice of 101 trucks and 35 akharas.

Expressing hope that the annual event will pass off smoothly, Rameshwardas said police have made elaborate security arrangements for the event.

He dismissed reports that fear-stricken people belonging to the minority community, residing in areas through which the procession is to pass, have fled the city.

Rameshwardas said the procession would be flagged off by Chief Minister Narendra Modi and accorded a warm reception by devotees, including Muslims, along its 35 km route, beginning and ending at the Jagannath temple in Jamalpur.

The procession would start at 0700 hours IST from the Jagannath temple and was expected to return at around 2100 hours, he added.
