The Top Five Rock Bands Ever

U2

If you haven't heard of Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen, Jr from Dublin, what have you been listening to this past decade?

Formed in 1976 when the four were fresh-faced teenagers, U2 made it big in the 80s, at around the time music television was beginning to have a huge impact.

They exploited the power of the medium to the hilt, relying on a body of rock anthems to push them to the top. With live shows that got bigger and better with each new album, they entered the new millennium poised to take on the title of World's Biggest Band.

1987's The Joshua Tree marked a turning point for the band, taking them from just another success story to mega-stardom. The aura hasn't faded, as they continue to break touring records.

That they continue to push the envelop has made it easier for coming generations to accept them with as much fervour as preceding ones have. Bono's much-publicised role as human rights campaigner has also helped, making U2 that rare thing -- a band with a conscience.

Listen to this: The Joshua Tree [1987]; Achtung Baby [1991]; Zooropa [1993]; All That You Can't Leave Behind [2000].
