My thoughts on what makes for a good NOS for an ISP. The parameters to consider would include:
* Performance
* Stability/Uptime
* Scalability
* Cost
* Availability of a suite of solutions
* Availability of sysadmins
* Ease of content deployment and delivery
* Support from the vendor
My gut feeling is that Windows NT makes for as attractive a platform as any other solution available on the Unix platforms.

Linux, anyday. It may take more time to set up that NT, it may be a little less novice-friendly... but its uptimes beat NT anyday. I run Linux at home and work on an NT server in the office. Not a week has gone by when I haven't had to reboot, or at least close and re-open critical programs to prevent the server from crawling like a centipede with 99 wooden legs!
Linux is free, it's robust, and best of all, it has the sources freely available, so making small modifications and customisations is easy and doesn't put you at the mercy of the whims and fancies of the vendor.

I'm personally prefer Unix as the best OS for networking purposes closely followed by Linux. An ISP would be looking to set up a web server and the one of the best ones around is Sun's Java Webserver written in 100% Pure Java. It was a breeze to setup on Unix and stable as anything I've seen. I've had problems setting it up on a Linux machine and it crashes quite often. As for NT, you'd be looking at IIS and Frontpage which, in my opinion, is a piece of s**t.
I do have Linux installed at home and it is pretty stable although I couldn't use Java Webserver. Apache is just good as a server.
We have NT installed at my work-place and all we use it for is switching the computer on. Then we start up X-win and log on to our Solaris, Linux accounts for all purposes including document creation (Latex), databases (mSQL, ingress). There's nothing you can't do on a Unix box.

Unix, if it comes with a better user interface , better than vi etc.. for dummies like me . I do not like Windows , because of fatal error and illegal operation ! Blue Screen and reboot!
I had no chance of using Linux.
I am hardware design engineer using Sun / Solaris work station and Windows NT networked PC at work and Windows 98 PC at home. Windows is good , but blue screen is the problem .

As for Ms.Ganesh, Hmmm - Microspeak , eh ? ( http://www.around.com/microspeak.html ). For those of you who still have trouble getting rid of nagging doubts planted in your minds by MS FUD, please
refer to the Kirch paper at "http://www.unix-vs-nt.org/kirch/" - might help you to get rid of some warm and fuzzy notions like "lower TCO by using MS products". For the cost conscious IT manager Linux would be the ideal choice - it has a proven track record and is growing ; sites like dejanews use Linux.

I bet for Unix. It is long lasting. Less chances of hacking the security. Windows is just like as you have given some toy in a kid's hands. Linux is like dhobhi ka kutta na ghar ka na ghat ka.

Obviously NT is out because ISPs don't want to reboot their systems several times a day.
And in the closer match-up of Linux v/s Solaris, Linux wins since it comes with source code thereby allowing easier fixes to savvy network admins. Plus it costs nothing.

Linux is as good as the best, and FREE. Do we really think there is choice to make?
UNIX will flourish until Linux becomes more acceptable. NT is under threat, as it is substandard product compared to Linux. In addition, Linux is likely to placed below UNIX and above NT in terms of size of accounts.
Linux needs to mature in terms of service, for it to fully accepted worldwide. I think India will lead the world in Linux implementations.
