Blown engine sends Alonso out

Renault's [ Images ] Formula One championship leader Fernando Alonso [ Images ] retired from the Italian Grand Prix [ Images ] on Sunday with a blown engine 10 laps from the end.

The Spaniard had been running in third place, with title rival Michael Schumacher [ Images ] leading for Ferrari [ Images ].

Alonso led the seven-times champion by 12 points before Sunday's race at Monza.
