Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Anil Kakodkar, now in Vienna for the International Atomic Energy Agency meet, should not start negotiations on India specific safeguard measures as it would amount to operationalising the Indo-US nuclear deal, Communist Party of India national secretary D Raja said in Chennai on Monday.
"If he starts negotiations, the position will become untenable as the United Progressive Alliance and the Left parties have an understanding that the deal will not be operationalised till the committee of UPA and Left parties discusses the issue," he told PTI.
Raja said that the second meeting of the committee would be held in New Delhi on September 19, which will hold discussions on the implications of the Hyde Act on the Indo-US nuclear deal.
The UPA government will submit its views to the Left parties on Monday on the queries raised by them on the deal during the first meeting, he said.
On the Ram Sethu issue, Raja said the Centre should not succumb to pressure from "religious fundamentalist forces" led by the Bharatiya Janata Party, which are bent on scuttling the project under some pretext or the other.
The BJP and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, which once supported the project, were now opposing it soley due to political considerations, he said.
