What young UP feels about elections

May 02, 2007
Now and then, statistics surface that more than half of India's population is below the age of 25.

What do these youngsters think of politics and our politicians? Are they interested in the election process at all?

As India's most populous state Uttar Pradesh votes in a seven-phase election, rediff.com spoke to a cross-section of young people from Varanasi, which goes to polls on May 3 in the sixth phase.

The Samajwadi Party has pushed the state behind, but all parties are guilty of fielding criminals, they said. The Election Commission has done a fantastic job this time, they chorused.

But, however good the EC's job might have been, it just will not be enough in Uttar Pradesh, they felt.

Rahul Gandhi has not captured the hearts of the young, they added.

And, the youngsters of Varanasi do not think much of a certain Mr Amitabh Bachchan.
