Maoists on Saturday called off the 14-day nationwide transport blockade staged to protest against King Gyanendra's power grab, official sources said.

A statement signed by the rebel leader Prachanda said the decision was taken because they wanted to show 'responsibility towards the public'.

Prachanda warned that 'if there are no changes (in the political situation) we will be obliged to observe an indefinite nationwide strike from next month'.

King Gyanendra declared emergency rule -- including press censorship -- and sacked the government on February 1 for what he said was its failure to deal with the Maoist insurgency.
