Bihar cops may seek warrants
against railway officials

Anand Mohan Sahay in Patna

The Bihar police investigating the cause of the derailment of the Horwah-New Delhi Rajdhani Express in September may seek arrest warrants against some railway officials supposedly found to have tampered with evidence at the accident site.

A senior official at the police headquarters in Patna claimed that investigators have found evidence against the railway officials.

The train had derailed on a bridge at Rafiganj in Bihar's Aurangabad district, about 130 km from Patna. One hundred and thirty persons had died in the accident.

Soon after the accident, Aurangabad Superintendent of Police Sunil Kumar Jha had lodged an FIR against railways officials accusing them of manipulating evidence at the accident site to corroborate the sabotage theory.

Jha had also lodged a complaint with Commissioner (Railway Safety) Mahesh Chand alleging that the accident site sketch prepared by the railways had been doctored to suit the sabotage theory. Jha rejected the sabotage theory in his complaint to Chand.

He has, however, refused to disclose details of the evidence gathered against the railway officials.

Soon after the accident, Union Railway Minister Nitish Kumar had floated the sabotage theory, while the Bihar government had blamed negligence and poor maintenance of the tracks for the mishap.

Notably, the statutory inquiry report by the Commissioner of Railway Safety has blamed the accident on sabotage.
