Delegates file countless Sonia nominations; none for Prasada

Tara Shankar Sahay in New Delhi

Innumerable nominations were filed on behalf of Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Saturday morning by delegates from all over India before the party's chairman of the central election authority, Ram Niwas Mirdha.

Sonia Gandhi, however, neither attended the party office at 24 Akbar road, where Mirdha has set up a makeshift office on the lawns, nor has she filed a nomination herself. According to the party constitution, nominations for the top post can be filed by the delegates.

Before filing the nominations, hordes of delegates called on Sonia Gandhi at her residence at 10 Janpath and assured her of their support.

At the time of writing the report, not one single nomination has been received on behalf of Jitendra Prasada, widely perceived to challenge Sonia Gandhi to the party president's post.

Emotions both at the party headquarters and outside 10 Janpath were entirely critical of Prasada's intentions that he could easily come to physical harm if he ventured anywhere close to these places.
