Congress poll process extended by a day

Chairman of the Congress party's central election authority, Ram Niwas Mirdha, on Friday announced that the party's inability to compile the PCC delegates list in major states like Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka has forced him to extend the party president's election process by a day.

According to Mirdha, the last date for filing nominations will now be October 29 instead of 28, and the last date for scrutiny of the nominations will be October 30 against the earlier 29.

Similarly, the last date for withdrawal of nominations is now November 5. The actual poll will now take place on on November 12 and the counting of votes, on November 15.

Mirdha said so far, the CEA has received the 4916 strong PCC delegates lists from 19 states and Union territories.

The states and UTs from where the list could not be compiled were Delhi, Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, Kerala, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Chandigarh, Dadra Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu.

Mirdha said according to the party's constitution, the election for the party president's post cannot be held unless the CEA received 75 per cent of the PCC delegates' list.

Even as Mirdha was addressing the media, a large number of supporters of senior party leader Jitendra Prasada, who is likely to challenge Sonia Gandhi to the party chief's post, shouted slogans demanding that the PCC delegates list be completed immediately.
