How the Rang De look evolved

Costume Designer Arjun Bhasin made his debut alongside Zoya Akhtar on Mira Nair's Kamasutra, as an assistant costume designer. Later, Zoya's brother Farhan Akhtar hired Bhasin for Dil Chahta Hai, due to the designer's association with Aamir Khan in a few commercials and a movie. Aamir recommended Bhasin to director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra for Rang De Basanti.

The man who co-designed the look for the new movie that is making waves spoke to Patcy N about how he designed outfits for the five lead actors. Excerpts:

Rakeysh Mehra wanted someone with an overall view for the film. Lovleen Bains, an accomplished designer, and I designed the look of Rang De Basanti.

Things materialised fast. They did not have much time to shoot and I had to leave for New York to begin work on Mira Nair's film The Namesake.

Rakeysh and I got along immediately. He had no doubt about whether I could deliver. But as Lovleen has done the major chunk of the movie, you can say the film belongs to her.

Design: Uday Kuckian
