The first car drove down Indian roads in 1898. But it was only a century later that foreign automobile makers were allowed to set up manufacturing plants in India and thus gained uninhibited entry into the hitherto protected Indian market. Liberalisation saw a galaxy of automobiles being made available to Indians: Mercedes, Ford, Fiat, GM, Hyundai, Honda, Chevrolet, Skoda. Car makers began to woo Indians with gusto. Having been fed staid fare of Premiers and Ambassadors, the Indian saw a new world of cars open before him. Already a wide range of automobiles is available, but soon newer and more luxurious cars will grace Indian roads.
