Beat the heat in Kodaikanal

March 22, 2007
Looking to escape the heat this summer? Look no further than Kodaikanal, also known as the 'Princess of the Hill stations'.

Kodaikanal (also known as Kodai) is a city and a municipality in the Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu and is located on the southern tip of the upper Palani Hills.

Enjoy the double benefit of a serene atmosphere amidst natural wildlife and archaeological delights in this place, which also has the distinction of being the only hill station in India to be set up during the British Raj by Americans.

American missionaries moved in after the British settled there in 1845. Some houses once built and occupied by Americans and the British can still be seen in and around Kodai, bearing testimony to their existence there.

How to get there

Air: Nearest airport is in Madurai (120 km from Kodaikanal).
Rail: The nearest railway station Kodaikanal Road (80 km) is directly connected by rail to Chennai.
Road: Kodaikanal is 485 km from Bangalore, 520 km from Chennai, 264 km from Ooty and 171 km from Coimbatore.
