Meet the Contenders

Mohinder Amarnath

'The national selectors are a bunch of jokers!'

Perhaps, no statement in Indian cricket history has been quoted as often as the one above. Never before, or since, had a player of international stature so perfectly mirrored the immense frustration of millions of Indian cricket fans, tired of the politics of selection, the procession of players picked and dropped for reasons patently non-cricketing.

Amarnath is the dark horse among the four candidates. It is surprising to see him shortlisted ahead of Dean Jones. But if he does get the job, Amarnath will have the opportunity to make a difference to Indian cricket.

Former India opener, captain and coach Anshuman Gaekwad and stumper Nayan Mongia feel that among Indian coaches Amarnath is the most capable.

The 54-year old earlier coached Bangladesh and Morocco.

Will India find the right coach?
