Ashes: Second Test, Day 1

Match report | Scorecard

The absence of McGrath seemed to have an effect on the England openers as they launched into the Aussie pace attack.

England put in on a slow pitch and in cloudy conditions by Ricky Ponting, took advantage with a flurry of boundaries.

Trescothick, who was caught off a no-ball from Michael Kasprowicz, blasted a 74-ball half-century.

England raced to 103 for no loss in just 23 overs.
