Rain washes out final day

England vs India:

4th Test: Day 5
The Oval, England
Report status: End of match
  • Scorecard
  • Statistics

  • The fourth and final Test between India and England at The Oval ended in a draw after persistent overnight and morning rain prevented play before lunch on the final day.

England were 114 for no wicket in their second innings, an overall lead of 121, with Marcus Trescothick on 58 and Michael Vaughan 47 not out.

The series ended in a 1-1 tie.

India had been bowled out for 508, seven runs behind England's first innings total of 515, about 40 minutes into the final session on Sunday.

Rahul Dravid, who scored a career-best 217 in India's first innings, was declared the man of the match.

Dravid was also adjudged India's player of the series while Vaughan won the corresponding award for England.

The 1-1 draw meant India's long wait for their first series victory outside the subcontinent has been extended.

India's previous victory was in 1986 in England, when Kapil Dev's team won the series 2-0.

After a sterling performance at Headingley, the Indians raised hopes of ending the drought with a win at The Oval. However, after the first innings consumed more than three-and-a-half days, with both teams scoring 500-plus runs, the chances of either team winning were remote.
