India vs West Indies - Third Test, day 1

Mohandas Menon

  • David Shepherd was officiating in his 67th Test match, which makes him the English umpire with maximum Test matches. He went past the tally of Dickie Bird's 66 matches. Now only West Indian Steve Bucknor (72 matches) has umpired in more matches than Shepherd in Test cricket history.

  • Parthiv Patel (17 years, 235 days) became the second youngest player to appear in a Test match at Calcutta. The distinction of being the youngest goes to Pakistani Mushtaq Mohammad who was 17 years, 38 days when he played at this venue in December 1960.

  • Ashish Nehra, who made his Test debut at Colombo (Sinhalese Ground) way back in February 1999 and who has already appeared in 10 Test matches since then, was playing a Test match at home for the first time. This was his 11th Test match. However the Indian record of playing in the most away Tests before a home game, 12, belongs to Javagal Srinath, who played his first home Test against the West Indies at Bombay in November 1994 after making Test debut in November 1991. Nehra, however had to wait three years and eight months after debut to appear in a home Test, while Srinath needed just three years!

  • Marlon Samuels was appearing his first Test match during this calendar year of 2002. He last appeared at Colombo (SSC) in December last year and since then has missed 11 Test matches for his side.

  • The last time any visiting team went into a Test match in India without a specialist spinner in the side was again the West Indies - at Mohali in December 1994. The visitors had then won the Test match by a whopping 243 runs!

  • The catch of Ganguly was the 28th dismissal (25ct+3st) for Ridley Jacobs this calendar year in 10 matches. He now joins Australian Adam Gilchrist (26ct+2st in 7 matches) to become the keepers with most dismissals in 2002.
