India vs West Indies - First Test, day 3

Mohandas Menon

  • The duck by Pedro Collins was was his 9th in 21 innings (& 14 Tests). This gives him a frequency percentage of 42.85, which is the worst by any West Indian batsmen in Tests with at least four ducks during their career. His teammate Merv Dillon (21 ducks in 50 innings) has the second worst frequency % of 42.00.

  • Zaheer Khan (4-41) playing in his 21st Test match, recorded his best bowling figures of his career. He betters his previous best bowling figures of 4-76, which came against Sri Lanka at Kandy in August last year.

  • Anil Kumble's "caught and bowled" dismissal of Chanderpaul was his 20th such dismissal in 74 matches. He now equals the Test record held by former England left-arm spinner Derek Underwood. The Englishman too has 20 "caught & bowled" victims in 86 Test matches.

  • The four wickets by Kumble have taken his tally of wickets to 24 in 5 matches at this ground. Now only Kapil Dev (28 in 11 matches) has taken more wickets at this venue than Kumble.

  • West Indies' 157 was the third lowest by any visiting team at this ground. The scores of 102 by England in 1981 and 141 by New Zealand in 1976 still remains the lowest team totals at Wankhede.

  • India's first innings lead of 300 runs was its sixth biggest in Tests. It was its second biggest against the Windies after the 394 run lead it took at Delhi January 1979. India had then made 566-8 and dismissed the visitors for 172 runs.

  • However, India's lead of 300 runs was the biggest achieved by team at this venue. The previous biggest was the 298 runs achieved by the home team (458-8d) against Australia (160) in November 1979.

  • This was the third occasion India has had the distinction of enforcing a follow-on against the West Indies. The previous two instances came at Kingston in January 1971 and at Delhi in January 1979. However both these matches were drawn!

  • This was India's second enforcement of the follow-on in last three matches. The team had enforced the option against England at Leeds two months ago.

  • This was the only second time a follow-on has been enforced at this venue. India had done so against Australia in November 1979 and had won the match by an innings & 100 runs.
