With both skippers - Sourav Ganguly (128) and Naseer Hussain (110) - scoring hundreds in this match, it provided the third such instance in a Test match between the two sides. Graham Gooch (333 & 123) and Mohammad Azharuddin (121) achieved this at Lord's in July 1990 and then in the very next match at Manchester in August 1990, this feat was repeated when England captain made 116, with his counterpart making 179.
Andrew Flintoff registered his fourth duck in as many innings at this venue. He had also bagged a pair against South Africa in August 1998 in his only other Test match at this venue.
Meanwhile Flintoff became the first Englishman to bag a pair at home against India. Fred Ridgway (at Madras in 1952), Mike Smith (Kanpur in 1961) and Norman Cowans (Bombay in 1984) are the other Englishmen who have had the misfortune to bag a pair against India.
The 4-66 by Anil Kumble in second innings was his personal best in England in six matches. His previous best bowling performance was the 3-84 in the first Test of this series at Lord's last month. With seven wickets in the match this was the maximum taken by Kumble in a Test in England. He had six in the Lord's Test match.
The seven wickets have taken Kumble's career tally to 332, which takes him past Allan Donald's wicket aggregate of 330. Kumble is now 14th in the all-time list of highest wicket-takers in Tests.
Felder Virender Sehwag became the only third Indian to take six or more catches in a Test match. The record of seven catches is still held by Yujurvindra Singh also against England at Bangalore in January 1977. Eknath Solkar against the West Indies at Port of Spain in March 1971 was the other Indian fielder to take six catches in a match.
The victory by an innings and 46 runs was India's best in an away Test match bettering their previous best win of an innings and 2 runs against Australia at Sydney in January 1978. It was also India's best win against England surpassing the innings and 22 run victory at Madras in January 1993.
Meanwhile, Sachin Tendulkar's 193 now becomes his highest Test score for a winning side. The previous highest was the 176 against Zimbabwe at Nagpur earlier this year in February 2002. Incidentally, his hundred in this match was the third he has made for a winning side in an away Test match. He had made 117 against the West Indies at Port of Spain in April and 104 not out against Sri Lanka at Colombo (SSC) in July 1993 - when India won the respective away Tests.
The 12 wickets captured by - Kumble 7, Harbhajan 4 and Giles 1 - in this match was the maximum taken by spinners at this ground in 25 Tests since 1975. The Ashes match in August 1975 at Headingley saw 11 wickets captured by spinners (Phil Edmonds 6, Derek Underwood 2, Ashley Mallett 3). Since then it was always the pacemen who have dominated Tests here.
This win was Ganguly's 11th as captain in 26 matches. Only former teammate Mohammad Azharuddin has more wins (14 in 47 Tests ) as India captain. However it was Ganguly's fifth away win, which was by far the maximum by any Indian captain. Nawab of Pataudi Jr and Bishan Bedi have three away wins.
