7th and final match: Coca Cola Tri series in Zimbabwe

India vs West Indies

  Daren Ganga (71) recorded his highest score of his career in his 15th match. His previous highest score was the 66 he made against Zimbabwe at Harare earlier in the series on 23-6-2001.

  Wavell Hinds (10, when on 9) became the 18th West Indian and the 146th batsman in LOI history to aggregate 1000 runs. Hinds was appearing in his 38th match of his career.

  The 108 run partnership between Carl Hooper and Shivnarine Chanderpaul was the second best partnership for the West Indies against India for the fourth wicket after the 126 between Hooper and Jimmy Adams at Jaipur on 11-11-1994. However the stand is the best for the Windies against India at a neutral venue. The previous best was the 81 between Viv Richards and Gus Logie at Sharjah on 30-11-1986.

  Hooper's 66 was his highest score as a captain. Leading the side for the 16th time, Hooper's previous highest was the 57 (his only other fifty) against South Africa at Port Elizabeth on 30-1-1999.

  West Indies' total of 290-6 in 50 overs was its second highest against India in LOIs. The best still remains as the 333-8 in 45 overs at Jamshedpur on 7-12-1983.

  Tendulkar's duck was his 13th of his career in 273 matches. His last duck came against New Zealand at New Delhi on 17-11-1999, which was then his 229th match. For the record, during this period, Tendulkar had appeared in 43 matches, while scoring 1890 runs (avg. 47.25), with five hundreds and nine fifties.

  This incidentally was Tendulkar's fourth duck against the West Indies. He now equals the tally of four ducks by Arun Lal - the maximum ducks by an Indian batsman against West Indies. Tendulkar now also has the maximum ducks against one particular country. The summary of his ducks being: 4 against West Indies; 3 each against New Zealand and Pakistan and one each against Australia, South Africa and Sri Lanka.

  This was the fourth time Tendulkar has had the misfortune of scoring a duck in a Grand final match of a LOI tournament. His other ducks were: against Pakistan at Sharjah on 25-10-1991 (first ball); Sri Lanka at Colombo (SSC) on 17-9-1994 (2nd ball); and West Indies at Singapore on 8-9-1999 (six balls). On this occasion his innings lasted four balls!

  The partnership between Reetinder Singh Sodhi and Sameer Dighe of 101 runs was the best ever for the sixth wicket by any team on Zimbabwe soil. The previous best was the unbeaten 90 between Graeme Hick and Mark Ealham for England against the home team at Bulawayo on 16-2-2000.

  Sodhi (2-31 and 67 runs) had the unique experience of recording his batting and bowling performances of his career in the same match. Interestingly, his previous best all-round performance (53 not out and 2-43) also came in the same match against Zimbabwe at Rajkot on 14-12-2000.

  The unbeaten partnership of 65 runs between Dighe and Debasis Mohanty was the best for the ninth wicket for India against the West Indies. The pair bettered the previous best of 29 runs between Chetan Sharma and Arshad Ayub at Ahmedabad on 7-1-1988.

  The above partnership was also the best for the ninth wicket on Zimbabwean soil by any team bettering the previous best of 55 runs between the Kiwi batsmen Chris Harris and Gavin Larsen at Bulawayo on 1-10-1997.

  The unbeaten 94 by Sameer Dighe was the highest ever individual score by a "genuine" Indian wicket-keeper in LOIs. Makeshift keeper Rahul Dravid has scores of 145 (v Sri Lanka at Taunton, 26-5-1999) and 103 not out (v West Indies at Singapore, 8-9-1999).

  Dighe's 94 just failed to surpass the previous best score by a number seven batsman in LOIs, which still remains as the 100 by Sri Lankan Hashan Tilleratne also against the West Indies at Sharjah on 16-10-1995. Dighe now has the second best individual score by a number seven batsman in LOIs. The previous best score by an Indian at this position was the 87 by Kapil Dev against the same opponents at Nagpur on 8-12-1987.

  Dighe in his 16th match bettered his previous best of 36 not out against Australia at Perth on 30-1-2000.

  Playing in his ninth match, Corey Collymore (4-49) recorded his best ever bowling performance on his short career. His previous best was the 2-29 against South Africa at Port of Spain on 12-5-2001.

  India has not won a final match of a tournament since November 1998, when it won the Coca Cola Cup at Sharjah beating Zimbabwe. Since then India has been in a final on seven occasions and has lost on all occasions.

  The only other occasion when the India team lost a Grand final after winning all its preliminary matches was during the Pepsi tri series in April 1998. India had then beaten Australia and Zimbabwe in two matches each, only to lose the final at Delhi to Australia on 14-4-1998.

  For Ganguly this was the third occasion he had to lead a losing Indian side in a final. Last October he led the team that had lost the final of the ICC Knockout at Nairobi (to New Zealand) and then the Sharjah Cup final (to Sri Lanka).

  It was West Indies' 15th tournament victory (involving three or more teams) since their first in the 1975 World Cup. Interestingly the last occasion the Windies won a LOI tournament was in the Coca Cola Challenge at Singapore in September 1999. In the final then the West Indies had beaten India by four wickets.
