The venues Bombay's contribution to the development of Indian Cricket is too well known to need elaborate description; however, Bombay Cricket Association (now known as the Mumbai CA) had no ground and no Stadium of its own where it could stage first class and Test matches allotted to it by the Board of Control for Cricket in India. They were staged at the Brabourne Stadium, thanks to the Cricket Club of India.

The Association in 1975 built its own stadium on a plot of land leased to it by the Government of Maharashtra. The foundation stone was laid on 15th May, 1972 at the hands of Shri S.K. Wankhede: the Club House was declared open on 25th October, 1974 by the then Chief Minister of Maharashtra, and the Stadium, named after S.K. Wankhede, was declared open by the Governor of Maharashtra on 21st June, 1975.

Interestingly, the first International match to be played at this Stadium was the fifth and final Test match between India and West Indies on 23, 24, 25, 27 and 28 January, 1975. Since then 17 Test matches have been played here. The capacity of the Stadium is about 45,000.

The first one-day international match was played on 17-1-1987 between India and Sri Lanka. In all eleven ODIs have been hosted at this venue. During in the 1996 World Cup flood-lights were installed for the first time at this venue.
