CBI report to be presented to govt in October

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

The Central Bureau of Investigation will submit its report on match fixing to the government of India sometime in the first week of next month, CBI joint director R N Sawani, who is leading the investigation, told rediff.com on Wednesday morning.

Asked why there has been delay in submitting the report, which was due in the last week of this month, Sawani said the report was ready but a series of holidays means that it might take a couple of days to hand over the report to Union Sports Minister Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa.

He, however, refused to divulge the details of the report. "We are taking legal opinion from our experts and then we will make recommendations to the government. CBI Director K Ragahavan will be handing over this report to Dhindsa," he said.

Sawani refused to reveal if they had found evidence against anyone or whether the preliminary report would be converted into an FIR.

"We are going to give the report to the government and it is up to them to decide whether to make it public or not. We are not interested in discussing the details of the report with the media," he said.

But sources in the agency said the delay was caused because the CBI was still getting legal opinion and also the fact that Dhindsa was tied up with the election campaign of his son in Sunam. Dhindsa is expected in Delhi only on September 30. Since October 1 and 2 are government holidays, he will be able to meet CBI director only on October 3.
