Kapil Dev resigns as India team coach

Kapil Dev has quit as coach of the Indian cricket team a day after he was asked by the cricket board to take charge of the squad's conditioning camp, which is set to commence at Madras on September 14.

"Kapil Dev has sent in his resignation on Tuesday to board president (A C Muthiah). We are now trying to persuade (Kapil's predecessor) Anshuman Gaekwad to take charge of the team at short notice," board secretary Jaywant Lele told PTI from Baroda.

"I could not talk to Gaekwad till late Tuesday afternoon as he was not available at office, but I have told his wife that he can tie up the loose ends at his office front, like getting sanction for his leave of absence before reaching Madras on September 14," Lele added.

In case Gaekwad accepts the offer from the board he will accompany the Indian team on its tour to Nairobi to participate in the ICC knock-out tournament from October 3 to 15.

The national cricket selectors are to meet in Madras on September 20 to finalise the 14-strong squad.
