Man of the match Ricky Ponting paid tribute to his side's "outstanding effort" after retaining the World Cup against India on Sunday.

Ponting, who scored 140 not out off 121 balls and hit eight sixes, said: "I saved it all up for the final. Everything went really well for us today.

"The batters put their hands up. I'm lost for words at the moment. It was an outstanding effort."

Australia became the first side to win the trophy three times as they defeated India by 125 runs with 10.4 overs to spare at The Wanderers.

They scored 359 for two from their 50 overs, the best score ever recorded in a World Cup final.
