Power and Desire

NEW YORK: Drawn from one of the finest collections of Indian paintings in the world, this exhibition features more than 70 paintings created between the 16th and 19th centuries for the Mughal and Rajput courts. These masterpieces, which have not been on public display in over 25 years, illuminates the complex and fluid relationships among gods, kings, lovers, and others, in settings that range from opulent palaces and lush gardens to cosmic spaces.

Organized by the San Diego Museum of Art in association with the Asia Society. South Asian Paintings from the San Diego Museum of Art, Edwin Binney 3rd Collection is co-organized by the San Diego Museum of Art and the Asia Society.

Festival of Odissi Dance

NEW JERSEY: The Indian Cultural Association at Rutgers University is organising a lecture/discussion on 'Information Technologies in India and its Globalization'.

Bollywood music awards

NEW YORK: The first Bollywood Music Awards is to be held in New York on November 12, 2000.

Nominees are already being chosen in various categories, eg best music director, best male singer, best female singer, best album, best dance video, best song of the year etc.

There will also be live performances by artistes from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, the Caribbean, the Middle East, the UK, New Zealand, Canada and America.

South Asian Lesbian and Gay Association

NEW YORK: The South Asian Lesbian and Gay Association (SALGA) is a social and political group for lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, and transgender people hailing from countries such as Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Burma, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Tibet, as well as people of South Asian descent from countries such as Guyana, Trinidad, Kenya, etc.

SALGA's monthly meetings are held on the second Saturday of each month from 3:30 to 5:30 pm at the Lesbian and Gay Community Center 1, Little West 12th Street. Meetings open to South Asians only.

Youth Internships

DRUM (Desis Rising Up and Moving), a social justice organisation of the South Asian Community in New York is kicking off the first-ever Youth Power Internship program. DRUM Youth Power eight-week intensive internship program seeks to empower South Asian youth from low-income communities in grassroots leadership and community activism through a combination of hands-on fieldwork and training.

The program seeks to provide much needed opportunities for youth from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Guyana, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Trinidad and other parts of the South Asian community in New York City.

DRUM requests individuals/organisations to contribute so that a stipend of $300 can be provided to each low-income youth intern. Cheques or money orders should be payable to The Brecht Forum.
