After the traumatic experiences of last week, film actor Samyuktha Varma and her family were faced with yet another problem when they lost their passports and money at a Manhattan (New York) restaurant.
On July 22, Samyuktha, her father Ravi Varma, mother Uma and sister Sangamitra were out touring Manhattan with C Vijayan of Tara Arts, one of the organizers of the trip.
After their excursion, the group went to Curry in a Hurry restaurant on Lexington Avenue around 2300 hours (local time) for dinner, Vijayan said.
Once there, Varma took out her camera from her hand bag and placed the bag on a nearby chair, he said.
During the course of the meal, she headed for the salad counter, he said.
However, when she returned, she was surprised to find that the bag was missing, he said.
The group looked everywhere in the restaurant but could not trace the bag, Vijayan said adding there were only two other customers in the restaurant at that time.
Apart from the passports of the Varma family, the bag contained around $3,000, Vijayan said.
A complaint was filed with the police, he added.
Later, the Indian Consulate in New York provided them with fresh travel documents, Vijayan said.
Samyuktha and her team are scheduled to perform in Orlando (Florida) and in Rockland County (New York state) before leaving for India by July-end.
Samyuktha has come with a group of artistes to the United States to participate in some programmes organised by local Keralites.
The group's brush with US law enforcement agencies last week proved to an unforgettable experience, which caught the attention of even the mainstream media.
