US to quiz Taliban official about IC-814 hijack

Aziz Haniffa in Washington, DC

The United States has agreed in principle to provide specific details about the hijack of Indian Airlines flight IC-814 requested by India from Wakil Ahmed Muttawakil, foreign minister of the Taliban regime who is currently in US custody.

A senior external affairs ministry official currently in Washington said the Intelligence Bureau would shortly submit to the US specific questions to be asked of Mutawakil, who was the interlocutor at Kandahar airport, after five armed terrorists hijacked the Kathmandu-New Delhi flight and landed it in the Afghan city.

He said Washington's decision to accede to India's request that US interrogators quiz Muttawakil about his role, and that of the Taliban, in the hijack, was yet another manifestation of the rapport that had developed between the US and India in intelligence sharing, and an integral part of the India-US Joint Working Group on Terrorism.

According to the official, the US, as soon as it received the specific details to be asked of Muttawakil from New Delhi, would proceed to grill him, which India believes may lead to further evidence of the nexus between the Taliban-Al Qaeda and Pakistan's ISI.
