Chinese President Jiang Zemin has expressed support for the US-led fight against terrorism but said military strikes against Afghanistan should be carefully targeted against proven terrorists and avoid civilian targets.
In a telephone talk with his US counterpart George W Bush on Monday night, Jiang reiterated that the Chinese government has always been opposed to all types of terrorism.
Jiang noted that President Bush has many times said that related military actions are aimed at specific targets of terrorist activities only and not against the Afghan people and measures will be taken to avoid injuring the innocent.
The Chinese side believes that adhering to the above-mentioned principles is very important for effectively fighting terrorism, he was quoted as saying by Xinhua news agency.
Jiang also stressed that China and the US, both having a major influence in the world, should shoulder common responsibility for protecting peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region and the world.
He said that the Chinese side is willing to work together with the US side to reinforce exchanges and cooperation, and make efforts to protect the world's peace and stability.
Bush thanked the Chinese government for its strong statement against global terrorist networks. He said the international community should stand united to fight the threat of terrorism, Xinhua reported.
Bush also confirmed his participation at the summit of heads of state of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in Shanghai from October 20-21.
