OIC condemns attacks on Afghanistan

The Organisation of Islamic Conference on Wednesday dealt a blow to the US efforts to build broad-based support for its strikes against Afghanistan by condemning the attacks at an emergency meeting of the group.

The organisation represents some 1.2 billion Muslims all over the world.

Emir of Qatar Sheikh Hamad, the current head of OIC, said the US response to the September 11 terror attacks should have been based on sound evidence.

"We assert our utter rejection of these attacks and assert that confronting them must not touch innocent civilians and must not extend beyond those who carried out those attacks," he said.

The foreign ministers of the 56-nation grouping were meeting in Qatar for a one-day emergency session called by Iran.

Only Syria, Iraq and Iran, hardline states known for their anti-American stance, had publicly criticised the strikes till now.

Delegates said the meeting would discuss sending a team of senior Muslim officials to Washington to dissuade the US administration from extending its military campaign.
