Jaswant to meet Albright

E-Mail this report to a friend

External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh will meet US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright for talks on bilateral and regional issues later this evening, US officials in Warsaw said.

"The meeting was tentatively fixed in the morning, but now has been put back by a few hours," the officials said.

Singh and Albright are in Warsaw to attend the inter-governmental conference "towards a community of democracies". They are key members of a seven-member ministerial convening group to guide the first-ever inter-government dialogue to evolve an agenda to strengthen democratic governance.

Singh and Albright had a brief tête-à-tête at the lobby of the Hotel Sheraton last evening where they bumped into each other.

The bilateral meeting later this evening will take place after the conclusion of the first day's deliberations at the conference being attended by foreign ministers from 100 democratic countries.

The meeting is also a prelude to the prospective visit of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to the US in September. It will be the first high-level Indo-US talks to prepare the ground for the second Indo-US summit in six months.

US President Bill Clinton visited India in March this year which helped bilateral relations chart a new course.
