Show-cause notice issued on Clinton's visit

The National Human Rights Commission has issued show-cause notices to the Delhi government and the Delhi police after roadside vendors of the capital sought compensation for the earnings they lost during the American president's visit in March.

NHRC sources said on Thursday that the government and police had been directed to give their responses to the petition, filed by the Rehri-Patri Khomcha Union, a forum representing these vendors, by August 29.

In its petition before the NHRC, the union claimed that the police removed about 50 vendors of the Ajmeri Gate area of central Delhi in the first week of March. They were not allowed to return till the end of the month.

The police took the decision to remove the vendors from the locality to ensure the security of the US president, who arrived in the capital on March 20 and stayed till March 23.

Their displacement resulted in a loss of approximately Rs 4,500 to each of them, counsel for the union Ashok Aggarwal stated in the petition seeking that the Delhi police and the government be directed to compensate these vendors
