The Davis Cup showdown

Spaniard Alex Corretja said he was prepared to face the wrath of the Australian crowd in retaliation for his perceived role in inciting a baying Barcelona crowd against Australia in the 2000 Davis Cup final.

Part of the focus for this weekend's final has been Australia's lingering resentment at their treatment by the Spanish spectators three years ago.

John Newcombe, who was the Australian captain at the time, said the abuse the team received in Barcelona was the worst of his career.

The war of words has already begun, and come Friday, the battle will be carried on to the courts.
